Connecting stunnels

Hi, I am newbie in stunnel world so sorry for my question if it was already answered earlier. I have the following task to solve somehow : We have 1 server with 2 stunnel connections (any kind). We have e.g. http communicatoin via tunnels. Is there any support in stunnel to connect them somehow. Probably we do not need bidirectional communication. [client1]----- stunnel 1---> [server]------stunnel2 ----->[client2] So [client1] --> [client2] If there is no support in stunnel do you have any idea how to do it? Kind regards, Gabor

Installed stunnel-5.31 (stunnel-5.31-installer) so that I can get MT4, a Forex trade platform, to send me mails to my Gmail account. I was told this was necessary because MT4 doesn't support SSL Authentication. I attempted to start and received this; [image: Inline image 1] It looks like a config file issue but also would not bind? Is this one issue? I was told all I needed to do with the config file is this; [image: Inline image 2] Can you please simply help me with the config file? I'm lost and need help. Using stunnel for TLS with Geotrust cert?

Hey stunnel-users, I'm having an issue both on stunnel4 and on 5 which I think is more related to a lack of understanding of the difference between how stunnel uses intermediate chain certs and root CA certs. I have from Geotrust, who signs my SSL certs, an intermediate.crt which by the stunnel docs should be catted into one stunnel.pem with the cert for my domain and the private key. The issue is when I setup everything on the server and try to connect with a client I either get for "verify 2" warnings about MiTM authentication problems, or for "verify 3" or "verify 4", which should disable CA checking altogether to my understanding, "Please specify CApath". I feel like I'm missing something critical in terms of pieces. The goal is to use stunnel as a proxy for mysql and the conf is pretty barebones: sslVersion = TLSv1 setuid = stunnel4 setgid = stunnel4 pid = /var/lib/stunnel4/stunnel4.pid debug = 7 foreground = yes socket = l:TCP_NODELAY=1 socket = r:TCP_NODELAY=1 cert = /etc/stunnel/stunnel.pem verify = 3 [mysqls] accept = 3307 connect = localhost:3306 It runs just fine using supervisor. Any thoughts and how I could make the handshake work between server and client using geotrust's intermediate crt as the CA cert, or something similar? It contains certs down to the root level. Install directory with /S /D=[path]

Hi all, I'm making an installer that installs stunnel as a dependency, and I'd like to customize its install directory while running it in silent mode. Per the NSIS docs, my command has the /S switch for silent mode, but when I try /D=[path], the installer ignores it and installs to Program Files (x86)/stunnel anyway. Is there a workaround for this? Minor bug in resolver.c

Hello Michal, I found a small bug on resolver.c. In function addrlist_resolve, in source line 318 for version 5.31, there is the instruction: num+=name2addrlist(addr_list, host->name) I think It should be: num = name2addrlist(addr_list, host->name) I found this because I created a service with three connect lines, like this: [ldaps] client=yes accept=127.0.0.1:7000 connect=10.1.1.1:636 connect=10.2.2.2:636 connect=10.3.2.3:636 And I found this line in the log: 2016.03.15 22:23:34 LOG6[0]: failover: round-robin, starting at entry #6 #6? It should be <= #2 ! I checked the source code, added some s_log instructions and found that the problem. Possible signal handling bug in fork mode

Hi, In fork mode, sending a sigterm signal to a child is caught by the parent. I suspect it has something to do with signal_pipe being shared by the child and parent after the fork. Here I sent a signal to the parent while a child process was also running. The parent shut down as expected. After sending sigterm, the child remains. windows certificate store

Hi I am running a windows instance of stunnel as a client and A Linux version as the server When I set this on the Windows side : engine = capi and this in my section: engineId = capi I get an error message that CApath or CAFile still needs to be set. My understanding is that these setting should make stunnel use the Windows certificate store to find a root and intermediate certificate to authenticate my (Symantec generated) certificate and should not require a CAfile. Error 1408F10B talking to Active Directory on port 636

Hi all! We’ve been using stunnel as part of a vendor supplied product for some time to connect a large application running in an application server on Windows to Active Directory for authentication via LDAPS (for some reason, it only natively supports LDAP!). Anyway, it’s been working fine until a couple of weeks ago when we started getting intermittent failures against all of our configured Domain Controllers (the upstream LDAPS servers). With no change in STunnel or DC config, some connections would abort with the following log: SSL_connect: 1408F10B: error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number … while others worked fine. The error is not limited to any one of the upstream DCs nor does it occur for every request. We’ve updated STunnel to the latest version (5.31) and the problem remains running on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. Below are two transactions from the same instance of STunnel connecting to the same DC one which works and one which doesn’t (IP addresses obfuscated). CRL checking

Hello, I noticed a change in functionality of CRL checking in server mode somewhere between stunnel version 5.2.00 and 5.31.00. We have multiple services listening for incoming connections and a global option CRLfile = crls.pem, with crls.pem containing a few CRLs but not one for every possible client certificate, and client certificates not all having a CRL distribution point configured. This worked with the old version in the sense that all clients could connect. I don't know If CRL checking really worked, they are all empty and I can't test. With the new version client certificates with no CRL and no CRL distribution point configured got rejected with errors "CERT: Pre-verification error: unable to get certificate CRL" and "SSL_accept: 14089086: error:14089086:SSL routines:ssl3_get_client_certificate:certificate verify failed" If I remove the global entry for CRLfile with the new version, all clients can connect again. I guess I could enter the CRLfile option on service level, but it could be that some client certificates connecting to a specific service have a CRL and some don't. My questions: Is this intended behaviour? I find it logical to check the CRL of a client certificate, if there is one in the CRLfile, if there isn't, to not check. Does a CRL distribution point configured in a client certificate play any role?

Problem with Stunnel 5.31 and Openssl 1.0.2g

I have a confusing problem I cannot figure out: I have two systems: one Redhat 5.10 x86, the other CentOs 5.10 x86 I compiled openssl version 1.0.2g on both systems I compiled stunnel 5.31 on both systems In both cases, this was updating older working verions of openssl and stunnel. On the Redhat system I used gcc44 On the CentOS system i used gcc4.1 The CentOS system works as before. On the Redhat system all self signed certificates are rejected. As I only use self-signed certificates to identify a set of known hosts, this is a problem for me. I tried various verify optios (2 3 4) both nothing changed. Any idea on how to fix this problem. Slow sending email through stunnel to Office365

After a bit of experimentation, I've succeeded in getting stunnel 5.31 running on my Windows 2008 r2 server and sending email through SMTP through Office365. My problem now is that it's quite slow. I can see a point in the log file where it stops for 5 seconds or more for each email message. Are there any parameter for stunnel that might help, or do I have to just accept that Office365 is slow? Here is my stunnel.conf file: debug = 7 output = stunnel.log [ms-smtp] protocol = smtp client = yes accept = 587 connect = smtp.office365.com:587 And here is the log file for an email transmission. Notice the 5 second pause at 12:31:04. Hello! I need to compile stunnel using VC for Windows x64 platform. I know that I can use MinGW/gcc and it will work, but VC used to build all other libraries and I want to simplify assembly process. I am try build stunnel by VC for Windows x64 platform and it builds fine but after start, stunnel crashed in VC runtime after calling setjmp function in client.c : /* try to process the request */ err=setjmp(c->err); I did some researches of the reason of a problem and found the following comment in prototypes.h: jmp_buf err; /* exception handler needs to be 16-byte aligned on Itanium */ The memory for CLI struct allocated by str_alloc_detached function (jmp_buf uded in definition CLI struct), but jmp_buf for AMD64/x64 must be 16-byte aligned to save state of SSE registers. Function calloc used for memory allocation in str_alloc_detached function and sometimes it return pointers not aligned to 16-byte boundary what causes a problem. I create dummy patch to workaround the problem but am think the best solution in that case is to use malloc instead calloc function (as described in some articles it’s always 16-byte aligned on AMD64 VC builds). Hi, I am experiencing an issue with version 4.29, which is the version available on yum for centos6. I am getting the following error: "Unexpected socket close (read_blocking)". This error only occurs once per stunnel instance upon the first connection only. More recent versions of stunnel do not have this problem, but I am hoping to work around this issue on the default version for this OS. My hosts.allow and hosts.deny files are both empty. I have tried adding my services to hosts.allow, but it did not have any noticeble effect. I'd like Stunnel to act as a reverse proxy that accepts TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.2 for https://example.com and then forwards the traffic to https://example.net, another web server that only accepts TLS 1.2 browser --TLS 1.0 or 1.2--> Stunnel --TLS 1.2--> Web App The browser should have no idea that example.net even exists (only example.com certificate will be presented to the browser). Is this something Stunnel can do? Or do you have other recommendations to get something like this working on Windows Server 2008 R2? Is there a way to force stunnel to use a specific user-agent string? I have mulled through documentation, this list, and other places with no results. The reason I ask, is the proxy I am going through is super strict, well not really. It will accept 'lynx' as a user-agent (among others), but it needs something. Hi, I am trying to configure one of my clients to use 'engine = capi', but cannot find a way to define which Key to actually use. debug = 7 does not show engine internal actions and engineCtrl = CAPI_CMD_DEBUG_LEVEL:2 gives an error, as well as engineCtrl = DEBUG_LEVEL:2 I'de appreciate any help with configuring this. Hi everybody, I'm pretty new on stunnel and I'm still learning a lot through the documentation. One of the tasks that i need to accomplish is to consolidate all the log information using logstash and ELK. So far I had managed to figure out most of the log file format. Here is an example of my log file 2013.01.11 11:26:35 LOG5[13520:140223486400256]: stunnel3 accepted connection from 127.0.0.1:45939 2013.01.11 11:26:35 LOG6[13520:140223486400256]: connect_blocking: connecting 123.4.5.6:9130 2013.01.11 11:26:35 LOG5[13520:140223486498560]: connect_blocking: connected 7.8.9.10:9130 The first two fields are date and hour but I don't understand what do the next field means (LOG5, LOG6). Next is the pid, but I don't know anything about the next field. The last one is the error explanation. Is there documentation about log file format? I'd really appreciate your help. Help: sTunnel http to Apache https?

Dear List Members, I searched, tried and recovered for several days and found no solution that works. My topic is to establish an ssh remote session through a http-proxy (http connect). In case of port restrictions I can only use pure https (443). So I try to wrap my http-proxy request into http over ssl (https) and receive it on an Apache https server. I can establish a connection between sTunnel Client (Win7 Prof) and sTunnel Server (Synology, Linux), both on 443 - that works fine. But if I try to connect from sTunnel Client (443) to Apache Server https, they seem to speek not the same protocol. .are there any examples for that? - or are sTunnel and Apache two different things of SSL? The rootkill mechanism I think is causing, but tried again to disable this, even doing several times, not as make is. Even latest Stunnel, make will fail. Where everyone is, what you can well Build. Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what " statically linked ELF executable for Android/ARM" means yet, but I will look it up. ;) Since I sent the message I did a lot of digging that yielded me very little details. In fact I only came a cross a few mentions that stunnel could be used on android but no examples of how that was implemented. After a vague hint I managed to deduced how the file worked, but it took me a little more independent research to understand how to make it, at least execute. I'm not new to linux but am new to android so not as familiar to how the system works in general. I did see that an android app was on your todo list. In the meanwhile however, may I suggest a little howto for Android that could get a user started in using the app. Stunnel is an amazing application and since I was able to figure it out I made myself a guide on how to set it up (Minus actually creating the configuration) so that I can at least know how to execute stunnel. Since I already did the research I offer you my very unorganized primer on how to set it up below. Perhaps it would be useful for some to have a better version of this doc on the site, and if not, well at least a well determined person can find this topic in the mailing list, because there will be only one other topic with the word "Android" in the title so it can perhaps get a user out of jam more quickly without. Here is my guide: ----------------------------- Chances are that "It is a statically linked ELF executable for Android/ARM." Means that within the stunnel-android.zip resides one file, and that file is the executable file for stunnel. It is in fact the defacto program that under linux you would see in /etc/local/bin/stunnel if that was where you installed it. This means that the requirements to use this file are as such: 1. Your phone probably needs to be rooted 2. You will need access to a terminal on your phone (Terminal Emulator) 3. There is no "APP" to run stunnel it is a command line file There are probably two reasons you would want to use stunnel on your phone. 1. You are an app developer that wants to use stunnel to connect one part of your app to something else, and therefore will incorporate this script within your app. I don't know how to make apps yet so that's probably as useful as I can make the description for you. 2. You are a user that has already used stunnel on your machine and wants to use it on your phone too. [The rest of the guide assumes this is the case.] Assuming the latter, what do you need to do to get it running? 1. Move the stunnel application to your phone. 2. As you would do in linux open the terminal 3. Run stunnel like a command If you get an error message saying it is not executable, or that permission is denied it is because of one of two things. Maybe you need to mark the file as executable Chmod +x ./stunnel Terminal Emulator's chmod does not understand "+x" so you will have to change the permission to Chmod 700 ./stunnel 700 means Read-Write-Execute for the user. If it doesn't work try 770 and 777 However you are likely to still receive that error on some phones. (I'm guessing, just because it happened to my phone I am not assuming it will happen to all phones.) Some phones forbid there to be an executable script within the /sdcard/ directory. Therefore you have to move it somewhere else. I don’t know where the proper place for such a file is, I moved mine to /system/bin/ therefore the script is callable by /system/bin/stunnel Another Caveat!! My phone's /system folder is not writable!! Therefore before you can even move the file you need to make the system folder writable: mount -o rw,remount /system Once moved needs to be made readonly again: mount -o ro,remount /system So In summary, here is a step-by-step of what might work in getting the script to an executable state on Android: 1. Hi, while testing the upgrade from stunnel 5.26 to stunnel 5.27 on Solaris, one of the tools I use reported that SSL compression was now supported/possible on connections to an stunnel 5.27 instance; this was not the case with 5.26 or earlier. Unfortunately, it is not possible to demonstrate this using openssl as client, I found this using TestSSLServer, which is java-based and available from http://www.bolet.org/TestSSLServer/. How do I use the Stunnel download on android?

In the download section of the site, there is a zip for android. Inside this file is a single file, without any extention. How do I install this, I have found no documentation anywhere on the web. Can anybody guide me, or give me a hint. Is this something I do on the phone, or that I do from the computer first? -cotex

Hi All, Stunnel expects TCP-based syslog. Please let me know whether syslogd of busybox supports TCP communication. The busybox version is 1.24.1 If it doesn't support , can it be enhanced to support TCP communication Regards, Girish

Client Authentication and CRL Verification

Hello everybody I am using stunnel in server mode with mutual authentication. Auth is ok, but the crl didn't work, and I need it in production next week.... I do many tries with CRLpath/CRLfile, with my production version (5.08), the last one (5.26) Same result. With a revoked certificate, my client connect on the server. Do you have some idea? Or maybe found my mistake? If you need something else please contact me. Stunnel 1 is the server. Failover behavior with stunnel

Hi, I have a couple of questions regarding failover with stunnel: 1. I would like to know if there is a way to use failover with two servers with two different set of TLS cert/key. The following rule doesn't work, because the cert and key parameters are overwritten, but it shows what I would like to achieve: [failover] accept = 127.0.0.1:4441 <http://127.0.0.1:4441/> cert = cert_1.cert key = key_1.pem connect = server-1:1234 cert = cert_2.cert key = key_2.pem connect = server-2:1234 2. On the same topic, I would like to know if there is an option that could open the local port (accept) only when the connection (connect) is established? The problem I'm facing is that I use a PAC profile with failover on several stunnel entries: "return PROXY 127.0.0.1:4441 <http://127.0.0.1:4441/>; PROXY 127.0.0.1:4442 <http://127.0.0.1:4442/>; PROXY 127.0.0.1:4443 <http://127.0.0.1:4443/>;". However, when one of the remote server is down (i.e. server-1), it is not easily detected by web-browsers (Chrome does not seem to detect it well), and so instead of switching to the next PROXY, it simply dies on the first one. If the port 4441 relative to server-1 (which is unavailable) was closed, then the webrowser could easily detect it and switch to the second server with port 4442. 3. Is there another way to tweak stunnel behavior when a remote server is down? I'm thinking about a couple of things, like being able to switch to a different rule set: [failover1] accept = 127.0.0.1:4441 <http://127.0.0.1:4441/> cert = cert_1.cert key = key_1.pem connect = server-1:1234 connect = 127.0.0.1:4442 <http://127.0.0.1:4442/> ; This is failover2 [failover2] accept = 127.0.0.1:4442 <http://127.0.0.1:4442/> cert = cert_2.cert key = key_2.pem connect = server-2:1234 Or maybe there are some options that I'm not aware of to timeout connections more efficiently: so that Chrome (or other clients using HTTP proxies) will immediately know that stunnel cannot connect to the remote server and so that the proxy is down. Dear All, Currently we are using syslog communication without any security. That is using UDP protocol with the server listening on port number 514. This is unsecure. I want to use syslog over TLS that is over TCP . As of now in my project syslogd daemon is used. I am planning to use stunnel to achieve this. I have few questions. Please clarify * To support stunnel, syslogd should be on TCP and not on UDP? * Is stunnel is a daemon ? * My understanding is syslogd forwards messages to the stunnel local portal at port 61514. The local stunnel forwards data via the network to port 60514 to its remote peer. * I assume stunnel-5.26(stunnel-5.26.tar.gz) is the latest version and this can be used on linux Regards, Girish
