Hello, I use Stunnel with Windows. The configuration file "stunnel.conf" and the log file "stunnel.log" are in the %USERAPPDATA%\Stunnel folder. Stunnel starts and works without problems. But the GUI options "Edit stunnel.conf" and "Reload stunnel.conf" do not work. Is remedy possible? Sebastian

I have found the stunnel version on PCB : stunnel 4.35 on x86_64-pc-linux-gnu with OpenSSL 1.0.0e 6 Sep 2011 the version on PCA is 4.52 this is perhaps a too big difference isn't it ? Best Philippe

Hi again Dewen; It sounds to me like Stunnel isn't being accessed at all. You should be seeing something in the Stunnel log window. I run Stunnel under Windows, so what I generally do is get Stunnel to listen to the loopback interface at address 127.0.0.1, or some other address within the loopback interface range. As such, if I was attempting to access it with a utility like Netcat, my basic stunnel.conf would look something like this for the client side: debug =7 [service.name] client = yes accept = 127.0.0.1:12035 connect = destination.address:1230 Then, I would point Netcat to the listening address and port. In your case, that might be netcat 127.0.0.1:12035. Then see if Stunnel logs your connection attempt. Again, this is under Windows, so your mileage may vary. Let us know how it works out for you. Hi all, I am a new guy to stunnel. here is the issue I meet, i install my stunnel in the lab. and trying to run the test with netcat. Here is the config file i test: client side: ... ... output = stunnel.log client = yes [ncat] accept = 12035 connect = ***.***.***.***:1230 then I run "stunnel test.conf "and the the log file shows configuration successfully then I run the command "cat test.file | netcat ***.***.***.*** 12035 on the client side and run netcat -l -p 1230 > output nothing happens. Stunnel 1.45 on Win7 x64, OCSP blows up

I'm using stunnel in client mode on a Windows 7 x64 workstation, installed using ftp://ftp.stunnel.org/stunnel/stunnel-4.52-installer.exe Everything works until I try to check the server certificate for revocation using an OCSP server, at which point stunnel crashes whenever I make a connection. The following error pops up in a dialog box: OPENSSL_Uplink(0FBE5000,14): no OPENSSL_Applink My config is pretty simple: -------------------------------------------------------------- debug = 7 # I do want FIPS enabled, but I figured one problem at a time. fips = no CAfile = ca-bundle.crt verify = 2 OCSP = http://ocsp.test.net/ options = NO_SSLv2 [test1] client = yes accept = 127.0.0.1:80 connect = web.test.net:443 -------------------------------------------------------------- The log gets as far as: 2012.03.02 11:07:41 LOG7[4296:5008]: OCSP: server connected when it crashes. -- Mike

Hi guys, Right now I am working on this issue trying to encrypt the communication between terminals and our back of house computer. I am trying to solve this problem with stunnel. If the terminal is 'smart' like computer, it will be no issue. implement the stunnel on both end. But it come to be a problem there is some dumb terminal, No way to set up stunnel in its side. I not sure stunnel can works here any more. if not, is there any other methods that may work? -- *Dewen Kong*

I'm using Stunnel in our environment to tunnel our ZooKeeper connections... it works reasonably well as long as ZooKeeper is running on our ZooKeeper servers properly. I made some changes to my stunnel config, and had one account working. I added the remaining 3 and it seemed to start to work, but now it has stopped. Outbound (send) seems to be fine. Any ideas????? How to get stunnel to listen on an IPv6 interface?

Hi - my server was recently connected to IPv6 as well as the original IPv4 network. I have been using stunnel for some time on the IPv4 network but now that I have IPv6 access I can't work out how to get stunnel to listen on that interface as well. Stunnel.conf won't load with certain ciphers.

Hello all: I'm running Stunnel 4.52 under WinXP SP3. Last night I had some questions about how the cipher list in Stunnel interacts with the cipher negotiation routine between client and server, so I did some experiments in an attempt to address those questions. In the course of doing so, I noticed that, if I attempt to load certain ciphers, Stunnel would stall at configuration load. How to pass remote IP to local SMTP/POP3 server

Hi I have question, because I was not able to find answer anywhere on internet. I started to use Stunnel in server mode to provide POP3S/SMTPS functionality. Everything works fine except that I am missing remote IP of connecting client. I am using Windows version so I can not use transparent proxy mode working on Unix. Is there way how to make Stunnel for example after each establishment of TCP connection to send to SMTP/POP3 server port some special command like REMOTEIP 123.123.123.123<crlf> to pass this information there. I know it is not in SMTP/POP3 standard but it is simple for me extend behavior of SMTP/POP3 service by this command? Configure and make went fine, make install failed in tools with error if uname | grep SunOS; then \ ../auto/install-sh -c -d -m 755 /tmp/stunnel/var/lib/stunnel/dev; \ mknod /tmp/stunnel/var/lib/stunnel/dev/zero c 13 12; \ chmod 666 /tmp/stunnel/var/lib/stunnel/dev/zero; \ fi SunOS mknod: Not owner -- mknod is not allowed in solaris zone, only in global. One of many notices of this error skayser's http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg03031.html asks if mknod is needed on solaris 10. So I tried after configure comment out the mknod section in tools/Makefile. -- install-data-local: ... ... if uname | grep SunOS; then \ ${INSTALL} -d -m 755 $(DESTDIR)$(localstatedir)/lib/stunnel/dev; \ mknod $(DESTDIR)$(localstatedir)/lib/stunnel/dev/zero c 13 12; \ chmod 666 $(DESTDIR)$(localstatedir)/lib/stunnel/dev/zero; \ fi -- Now make install ends OK and stunnel works fine (I use it as client only). I have a program that only allows me to enter a From email address and a mail server IP in its setup. Is there any way that I could enter a username and a password in stunnel.conf and let Stunnel send this information out to Office 365 or Gmail for delivery? Thanks! Jim

Hello, I have encountered a couple of issues with stunnel 4.45 on RHEL 5.5. I tried configuring stunnel to log messages in /var/log/messages and later found that messages were logged both in that file AND /var/log/messages. In stunnel.conf, I had specified: debug=local6.info In syslog.conf: local6.* /var/log/stunnel.log I could achieve what I wanted only with the combination of the following two options: syslog=no output=/usr/local/app/stunnel/var/stunnel.log Is this expected? The second issue I have noticed is that stunnel seems to have a bit of trouble handling the hup signal. Dear sirs I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, Outlook 2007 and 4 x gmail accounts (1 x personal (gmail.com) and 3 x business (baroni-limited.com, hosted by gmail). I have set up Stunnel, I belive the latest version and created a SSL license as instructed. The Stunnel Telnets OK and I can send and recieve eMails (I do send directly via my ISP rather than use Stunnel) without any problem. Where I seem to be having problems is that: I have no sub folders to each account. None are appearing. I have no calendars - I have followed the instructions but they fail to load. I have no contacts. Message from Outlook: Sync error > > Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for Baroni.' reported error > (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for Baroni. > Error: Cannot connect to the server. If you continue to receive this > message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider > (ISP).' > > Task 'Internet Calendar Subscriptions' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The > operation failed. An object cannot be found.' > Config attached - I hope. It is most likely I have missed something or done something wrong. Im just assuming that if I am passing from Stunnel from one system to stunnel on another, one of them should be client and the other should be server. This works well on our old configurations and as far as I can see from a stunnel and network route perspective all rules are identical. Why would it work from Server B to Server A on the response if I go directly to Server A, but fail locally? The configuration looks correct, what else could I check?

Multiple Config Files

Hi All, I'm new to the STunnel system but I'm loving what I have seen so far. However, I was wondering if its possible to have a setup something along the lines of the following: general.cfg - containing my general server system details http.cfg - containing the details of my HTTP server pop3.cfg - containing the details of my pop3 server etc. etc. but linking them all from one file so that if I want to remove the pop3 service I can just remove the pop3.cfg file and one line from the base file. I hope that someone understands what I'm getting at but if you need any more info please just let me know. Yours, Scott

linux default installation

Hello. I am comparing a default installation of "stunnel.conf" in Linux with that in Windows, and I found some differences that I have a couple questions about. The Windows installation installed in client mode by default, but the one for Linux in server mode. I made a backup copy of the default files for both. For now I want to run stunnel in Linux in client mode, so I am making some changes to it. The installed default for these six parameters are as follows: Client=no Chroot=/var/lib/stunnel/ Setuid=stunnel Setgid=nogroup Pid=/var/run/stunnel.pid Cert=/etc/stunnel/stunnel.pem Is it correct to change these settings for testing in client mode so that they match the current Windows' client mode configuration, like so: Client=yes #Chroot=/var/lib/stunnel/ #Setuid=stunnel #Setgid=nogroup #Pid=/var/run/stunnel.pid #Cert=/etc/stunnel/stunnel.pem

stunnel log delayed

Hello, I am running stunnel on Linux in client mode, and I have the following setting in "stunnel.conf": output=stunnel.log The log does not get written to periodically while the program is running but is delayed until after I have closed the program. It would be helpful to be able to look at it from time to time, especially while troubleshooting. Any way "to push" the data down into the file sooner? Thanks. John

Hello, I find the following error my syslog when stopping stunnel 4.52. The program seems to be unable to shutdown cleanly (ex: pid file doesn`t get removed). stunnel: INTERNAL ERROR: Memory allocated in a different thread at network.c, line 63 This is how I configured: LDFLAGS=-Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/app/openssl/lib64 \ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/app/stunnel \ --includedir=$PKG_HOME/openssl/include/ \ --with-ssl=$PKG_HOME/openssl/ \ --with-threads=fork \ --disable-libwrap Where PKG_HOME is a variable of my own. I had the same error with version 4.51. I do not see the error when running in foreground. I do not see the error either if I compile with threads instead of fork. In case this information is needed, this is how I configured openssl. ./config --prefix=/usr/local/app/openssl --libdir=lib64 shared zlib-dynamic no-ssl2 This is on RHEL 5.5 Regards.

SSLv3 on Win32 does not work

Hi I am using the latest version of stunnel in server mode (converting POP3S to POP3) I need to make service work in SSLv3 mode. In TLSv1 it works fine, when I add to stunnel.conf tag sslVersion = all, it still works fine, but when I use sslVersion = SSLv3 although config file is loaded properly, process EXE crashed during establishing the connection. It looks like some bug in actual version of stunnel. Does somebody experience same problem? Hi! I have downloaded the Android port of stunnel: http://mirrors.zerg.biz/stunnel/stunnel-4.52-android.zip I would like to use it on my Android tablet but I don't know how to start or use it. I have root access on the device. I placed the stunnel and openssl files into /data/stunnel/ directory. Both files have execute permission. Hi, I want to setup the following architecture : stunnel ---> haproxy --> 2 webserver. I run severa virtual host on the 2 webservers, and a subset of them needs https. I can allocate several IP address for the host that run stunnel. How do I configure a single stunnel process to have a certificate per IP for the port https? I tryed to add several section like the following : [mansonthomas.com] cert = /etc/stunnel/sites/mansonthomas.com/mansonthomas.com.crt accept = 88.190.17.222:443 connect = 127.0.0.1:82 xforwardedfor = yes TIMEOUTclose = 0 So the question is : Is it possible ? do you have a sample configuration file to share for this use case? :o( Stunnel KO on Windows Server 2003 VM

Hi all ! I'm new with Stunnel. It'a nice tool that works perfectly on Windows 7 64-bit host but won't start on Windows Server 2003 guest VM (VMWare Player 3.1.x). When I try to start it, I have a message like "can't initialize...". I'll give you the exact message tomorrow, I don't have now the VM on hand. On Windows 7, when I started Stunnel for the 1st time, I was asked to create a certificate with a kind of wizard but on the Windows Server 2003 VM, it stops before this step. Is it a known problem on VM ? What could I check ? I managed to make the software I'm testing (SMTP sending function) on the VM "talk" to Stunnel on my host by I'd really like to install it on the VM to be independant from host. Hi All, I have query regarding Stunnel (version 4) working. We have a windows client application which communicates with a web service via SSL encryption with DSA algorithm. The windows client machine is using a pfx file for authentication with server. Now we need to convert this windows machine with a linux machine and hence we converted the pfx into pem file. Key files across NFS

I have an stunnel config saved on an NFS mount so it can be shared with other servers, it only seems to work if the key file is stored locally, as soon as I move the key onto the NFS mount I get the error: /disks/disk1/stunnel/certs/wildcard.key: Value too large for defined data type (75) Any idea why that might be and what I might do to fix it?

We are using version 4.33 with RedRock Software - Tutortrac Stunnel will crash. The stunnel service terminated unexpectedly. Faulting application stunnel.exe, veraion 0.0.0.0, faulting module libeay32.dll, version 1.0.0.0 fault address 0x000731ee. Any ideas? -Jean Berkeley College

Improving SSL security and protecting against the BEAST attack

Hi all, Long time lurker, but first time poster on the Stunnel mailing list. I'm currently entering into a business partnership with a prominent media group, and as such they've got some strict guidelines by which their partners should abide by when it comes to Security/Encryption, both for brand protection, and making sure that both sides are sufficiently covered (at least from a general scan point of view). Basically the big thing that is coming up in my testing now (predominantly using the Qualysis tool at www.ssllabs.com) is that I'm vulnerable to the BEAST attack, CBC-Mode vulnerabilities and a potential issue of DoS attack due to server accepting Client Side Re-negotiation. I've spent days now trawling the web looking for a solution, but haven't really found anything of use yet, short of disabling CBC Ciphers completely (e.g 'cipher = RC4-SHA:RC4-MD5:!SSLv2:!ADH:!EDH:!EXP:!aNULL:!eNULL:!NULL' or similar), but I fear this me be too restrictive when it comes to client support. I guess my question is, are there other stunnel users who've been in the same situation, and is there a recommended cipher/options list when using Stunnel for HTTPS? Thanks in advance Shannon

No SSL handshake between stunnel in client mode and SSL server

Hi guys, I have a quick question. I am trying to use stunnel in client mode to encrypt traffic going to my server. Basically, I have a server which listens for SSL connection. And I have a client which can not do SSL but it needs to communicate with server over SSL. I setup stunnel in client mode to accept unecrypted traffic from client and redirect it to server over SSL. I checked TCP traffic with WireShark between stunnel and my server and I can see that there is no SSL handshake, stunnel makes TCP connection with server and sends some TCP packets but I expect to see SSL handshake. My stunnel conf file is here: [Router] client=yes accept = 192.168.1.121:55555 connect = 192.168.160.168:55443 Can you please comment on this? Best regards, Denis

Possible use-after-free in stunnel 4.52

Hello, I am using stunnel 4.52 in client mode with exec and connect. The client program that stunnel execs periodically exits, and is properly re-started by stunnel, as I have "retry = yes" set. However, after a retry, I occasionally get a segfault inside one of the OpenSSL libraries. It does not happen right away, but once it happens, every retry causes the same segfault. I did some debugging and it seems that what is happening during a retry is that the SSL connection is brought down in client_run(), then is freed via SSL_free(c->ssl). However, it seems that c->ssl is used after this free, for example in connect_local(), which calls SSL_get_peer_certificate(c->ssl). When exec, connect, and retry are all set, client_main() will call connect_local() after client_run() exits. stunnel and connection alerts for Windows

Hello. It would be helpful to me to see a little popup window notification of connections or data transfers made through Stunnel, a small and unobtrusive alert of such kind as not requiring me to open another Window, etc.. One thought I have along these lines is to have the stunnel Log Window to serve this purpose by having a configuration option for it to open in a small window by the system alert toolbar on the bottom right, providing a one-liner or abbreviated rendition of its current logging text. I do not know of a way to make this happen within stunnel itself, but if there is functionality of this sort already available, please advise. Another program that comes to mind with this sort of purpose would be Growl, which allows developers to make plugins to create this effect. http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/apps.aspx. stunnel and local proxies

Hello. At times I would like to have Stunnel (in Windows OS) running through a proxy on localhost, say, a socks proxy. Based on what I have seen and read here and in the list archives about that, although admittedly I have not yet read every single thread, I am inclined to say that it is not designed to do so easily if at all. Someone even suggested to me that these settings alone would allow running it over a socks proxy on my machine: ; these settings relate to using stunnel through a proxy ;protocol=connect ;protocolHost=127.0.0.1:portXYZ I tested this on my system but it failed to work. On the other hand I have had success using a program like socat for this purpose. Am I correct in thinking that the above settings alone are not going to do it or do I need additional settings with them for this purpose, or is it not going to work with Stunnel alone? Thanks.

STunnel on Windows (2008R2 Server)

I am attempting to use stunnel to encrypt traffic between our backup client (Window2008R2) and our NetApp filer, but I'm not having any luck We would like to use the stunnel to redirect the port 80 calls to the filer (ubfs2.buffalo.edu) to port 443. Be design, the backup client (IBM Tivoli/TSM V6.2.4) makes a call to the Netapp over http.admin interface to tell it to create a snapshot. The filer listens on https.admin (not http.admin), and we don't want to turn on http.admin for security reasons. I've included the stunnel.config file, hosts file, and the output below. If anyone could give us a hand here it would be much appreciated. stunnel and socat

Hello. I use socat to connect stunnel to a socks proxy on my client workstation running windows. the socks proxy then connects to a news server on the internet. The initial connection works just fine and it appears to stay connected while I am transferring data and for a while afterwards; but after a period of idle connection say five or ten minutes, I get a message from my network adaptor popup saying that the connection stunnel had to my localhost has failed. Any ideas on how I can make the connection between stunnel and localhost persist longer during periods of inactivity? I would like it to stay connected until I purposely stop it. certificate authentications

I have two questions, which I think may be related, regarding how to use the information from stunnel log. I use stunnel to connect to an SMTP server on the internet from my home network, and in particular from my Windows laptop. My stunnel version is this: stunnel 4.50 on x86-pc-mingw32-gnu platform Compiled/running with OpenSSL 0.9.8r-fips 8 Feb 2011 It works well for my purposes, and I can see, by using a program for monitoring process and network connections, that the connections are now secured as expected. However, I believe it can be made more secure if I can utilize the certificate that is offered by the server, but I am not sure how to make that happen. In my stunnel log for the connection, I get this message: Client-mode smtp protocol negotiations started Client-mode smtp protocol negotiations succeeded No peer certificate received SSL connected: new session negotiated Negotiated ciphers: ADH-AES256-SHA SSLv3 Kx=DH Au=None Enc=AES(256) Mac=SHA1 My first question is, how should I go about getting that "No peer certificate received" issue corrected and how do I install it? Secondly, when I issue this command at the cmd shell prompt: openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect host.server:port The output is lengthy and it includes, among other things, clearly what is identified as a certificate. I have been told that this is a good certificate, and one that I should utilize for an authenticated connection. So, my question is, is this the same certificate that I saw referenced in the log as the "peer certificate", and how do I go about putting this certificate where it belongs in my directory? I know how to copy it and save it as a file, but where do I put it and should it have a special name? If someone wants to direct me to the correct instruction for doing this, that would be fine too. I am just looking for some pointers for assistance. Thanks.

I have several client applications running on win machine, connecting to the same server, or sometimes to different servers. ver. 4.2 allowed me to do the following: modify .conf file to [my_section] accept=5566 connect 123.22.33.44:5005; then run stunnel.exe; modify .conf file to [my_section] accept=5567 connect 456.22.33.44:5006; then run stunnel.exe. That would start 2 stunnel.exe processes, each one handling its own connection; which were easy to close when each respective client app closed - each one would close the one it started. Now with 4.5 version: the single stunnel.exe process runs and is able to handle all communications perfectly, provided I prepare .conf file for all possible connections in advance, before starting stunnel. The problem I cannot solve easily is how not to leave stunnel running after client logged out of all the applications. Without building something to keep track of "stunnels users" count, how could I do it? Is there some way to switch to multiple instances mode? Please advise. client side SNI

It looks like server name for client side SNI is defined as name to connect to in connect option. According to RFC, this name must be FQDN. It is the only place where it is defined and server name for SNI cannot be defined outside connect option. Is that right? Server side SNI has some good examples. Searching for "client side SNI" did not yield anything useful. I am trying to run multiple independent services over the same port there is no DNS infrastructure in place, so those server names would be random strings not refering to anything. Both ends would be stunnel. If it is as it seems, it will not work, because defined server name (at client) must be working DNS name (FQDN).

Verify = 3 and Giganews

Hello, I've tried to use verify = 3 with Giganews on several occasions now, but it always fails. It works fine with other servers, however. fips=no and slow performance problem

I have a production system that uses stunnel and it's been working pretty well. Mike, thanks for all your hard work. But there has been a weird issue that I ran into a while ago and now it's happening again. we're using a rackspace cloud machine to run stunnel and haproxy. we're using the x-forwarded-for stunnel patch for now with plans to upgrade to send-proxy method once haproxy 1.5 is considered the stable branch. So I built one machine and ran into the "FIPS_mode_set: 2D06C06E: error:2D06C06E:FIPS routines:FIPS_mode_set:fingerprint does not match" error message. So I changed the config to fips=no and stunnel started up but the https seems really slow (multiple browsers). We run with significant https volume. So the fips=no option didn't work for us. I kept trying different things but nothing worked. I decided to start clean and built a new machine. This time stunnel didn't throw the FIPS error and everything performed great. So used the new machine instead. Now after some time (over a year), we had some performance problems. we rebooted the machine and now we have the FIPS error again. I've tried multiple versions of stunnel (whatever I could find working patches for) and also tried a clean 4.51 with no patches. all of them throw the FIPS error now on this machine. I'm in the process of building a new machine to see if it magically works again. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Owen

Hi, I am also having no luck using the stunnel-4.5* series. The last/latest working for me is 4.49. $ uname -a Darwin SciFi.homeip.net 10.8.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun 7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386 iMac6,1 Darwin (altho this is a C2D machine, running most tasks in 64-bit mode, Apple has left the EFI/BIOS/kernels at 32-bit… yes I can boot+run 10.7/Lion, but that is a total separate topic altogether [don't get me started]…) I mainly use stunnel with Pan, to connect to Giganews, Astraweb, and Gmane (which is what I'm using now to post this message). I use the simple 127.0.0.1:port mechanism. (I've been working with one of Pan's new developers, to try their new GnuTLS support; but until that works, stunnel is my known supposedly-functioning fallback.) I've tested every 4.5x release, including today's 4.52b1 & b2 -- all act the same, in that Pan tries to connect to stunnel, and that's all I see, nothing further happens. Also, the 4.5-series produces much-less log-listing, as you'll see in my attachments below. I am fine while relegated to using stunnel-4.49, but we have a further issue, in that the "verify=<number>" option seems to reject the certs & what-not coming from these servers, for any <number> higher than 0 (yes I saw the maillist discussion about what 4 means there, and tried it also). I've been mildly joking with the Pan developer on how to be sure we are /really/ in secure mode. ;) Now, the details. I manually start stunnel on a login-root terminal window, this way: # stunnel /usr/local/etc/stunnel/stunnel.conf -sockets With these sample log-lists (below), I'm trying to get one single short post in a newsgroup. Stunnel 4.33 last one to work with VM & IMAP

I am running VM 8.1, the Emacs mail reader, connecting via imap to gmail. It can be made to work with stunnel 4.33 providing the encryption, but any version after that causes VM to choke when fetching messages, generating the following error message: vm-imap-protocol-error: IMAP protocol error: "unexpected char (10)" Not being an expert in any of the programs that are chained together to make my e-mail setup work, I was able to trace this no deeper than the point where VM reads the buffer Emacs uses for interprocess communication. Sure enough, there is a linefeed in a place where it isn't expected, but it also happens to be the first character in the sequence: " Process IMAP over SSL finished " which may be there because of problems deeper than the representation of "newline." At the end of this message I give my attempt to represent the complete contents of the buffer with name "trace of IMAP over SSL session to imap.gmail.com." The ^M's were inserted by hand because cutting and pasting didn't seem to reproduce them. I realize that I am providing quite a bit of information from VM, and none from stunnel, which is frustrating in an stunnel forum, but I am a complete newbie regarding stunnel. I would be glad to run further experiments with guidance on how to get stunnel itself to generate more useful information. The only reason I suspect it is that installing version 4.33 fixes the problem; but I realize it may be that VM or some other component is violating the rules somehow. When I say "any version after" 4.33, I mean that I have tried 4.35, the version installed by MacPorts; and 4.49, the latest stable version, recompiled by hand. Hi I have downloaded and installed: stunnel-4.50-installer.exe stunnel crash with message: Basic initialization failed at gui.cpp, line 842 Adding debug flag in .conf file does not generate any log file. Any suggestions on how to proceed is welcome. Best Regards K Rasmussn

Hello to all! I have a problem i have installed on my laptop in order to work with one service , i have to say it works like a charm , but it doesn't work on my PC both computers have Windows 7 No firewall in windows No firewall in router I can not understand what is missing , why is it working on what computer and on other is not This is my sunnel.conf client= yes debug= 7 output= stunnel.log [Rates] accept = 127.0.0.1:11009 connect = XXXXXXXXX.com:14009 [Deals] accept = 127.0.0.1:12009 connect = XXXXXXXXX.com:15009 Thanks in advance i appreciate any help.

Missing bytes?

Hello, When I telnet to my pop3 server and "QUIT" this is what I see: Escape character is '^]'. +OK InterMail POP3 server ready. QUIT +OK ? InterMail POP3 server signing off. Connection closed by foreign host. When I setup an stunnel 4.5 to the same pop3 server: [pop3s] accept = 995 connect = server:110 and connect with "openssl s_client -connect localhost:995" this is what I see: +OK InterMail POP3 server ready. QUIT DONE And the stunnel log reports: Connection closed: 34 bytes sent to SSL, 0 bytes sent to socket What happened to the last line "+OK ? InterMail POP3 server signing off." and why aren't the counters counting the 5 bytes I sent ("QUIT\n") and the last line of 41 sent over the SSL? Example 2 through stunnel: +OK InterMail POP3 server ready. USER -ERR a user name MUST be entered QUIT DONE Connection closed: 68 bytes sent to SSL, 5 bytes sent to socket (still missing the last bytes)

Hi Guys, Thanks for your replies. I tried following commands on verisign c certificate, for both of these do not work. There is error 'unable to load certificate'. openssl x509 -inform DER -in stunnel.pem -noout -text or openssl x509 -inform PEM -in stunnel.pem -noout -text however if I run same command (openssl x509 -inform PEM -in stunnel.pem -noout -text) on VeriSign root & Intermediate certificate it works. It shows format should be 'pem'. But somehow certificate is not valid. I am using following commands to create csr and private key. From the Stunnel logs, I can tell that I get a response from Stunnel and on the DOS window side, I have a cursor waiting for input.... Writing any gibberish into that DOS windows and waiting a little bit makes stunnel stop and die in the SSL machine. Hi, Can I develop an application based on OpenSSL such that it can communicate with all trusted sites ? Like browser can communicates? Actually I have desktop application that uses SSL. Now this application may communicate with any trusted server application. How can I achieve this ? I generated a pair of key and certificates with openssl 1.0.0d, and use them in stunnel 4.36. Today i upgrade it to stunnel 4.50 and it doesnot work. All configurations remain unmodified. Then i tested many versions and found, stunnel with openssl 1.00 works fine while with openssl 0.98 does not work. I use stunnel with linux server and windows client, stunnel 4.50 windows version is using openssl 0.98, so cause this problem. 4.47 is using 1.00e which i think is newer than 0.98 bundled with 4.50. So why stunnel keep changing openssl version?

Hi, Here are steps how I created certificate request and private key. Generate private key openssl genrsa -des3 -out server.key 2048 Generate certificate request openssl req -new -key server.key -out server.csr I submitted server.csr contents to VeriSign to get test certificate and they provided me three certificates. VeriSign signed certificated Root certificate Intermediate certificate I copied VeriSign signed certificate in stunnel.pem and other two certificates in ca.pem file. As per my observation STunnel is unable to load stunnel.pem file. If you need VeriSign test certificate I can provide you that as well. Please let me know if you need further information. Hi, I got VeriSign Test SSL certificate. I have been trying to configure it with STunnel. But there are errors in STunnel. I have placed private key and CA signed certificate in a separate file named 'stunnel.pem'. Root and Intermediate certificates have been placed in following order in a file named 'ca.pem' stunnel.pem -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- encrypted key -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY----- -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- VeriSign signed certificate -----END CERTIFICATE----- ca.pem -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- VeriSign Intermediate CA Certificate -----END CERTIFICATE----- -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- VeriSign Root CA Certificate -----END CERTIFICATE----- Here is stunnel.conf file. ;key = server.key cert = stunnel.pem ; Some performance tunings socket = l:TCP_NODELAY=1 socket = r:TCP_NODELAY=1 ; Workaround for Eudora bug ;options = DONT_INSERT_EMPTY_FRAGMENTS ; Authentication stuff verify = 2 ; Don't forget to c_rehash CApath ;CApath = certs ; It's often easier to use CAfile CAfile = ca.pem ;CAfile=zosIntermediate.pem ; Don't forget to c_rehash CRLpath ;CRLpath = crls ; Alternatively you can use CRLfile ;CRLfile = crls.pem ; Some debugging stuff useful for troubleshooting ;debug = 7 output = stunnel.log ; Use it for client mode client = no I have also tried to change order of certificates but nothing is working. Unable to make Stunnel on Solaris 10

Hi, I'm trying to compile and install Stunnel 4.47 on a Solaris 10 container. My GCC version is 3.4.3. The problem is that I get the following error during make make gcc:unrecognized option: '-pthread' Should I be able to compile Stunnel using this configuration or is there some option I can use to make it work? Multiple Domains for https

Will Stunnel work with multiple domains? For example if abc.com and xyz.com both resolve to the same ip address where the web server is running locally on port 4080. Going when to https://abc.com or https://xyz.com stunnel will encrypt the traffic and forward to the local 4080 port in the clear. What if 10 or 20 domains needed to be served by the same web server?

Is Stunnel Right Tool for....?

Is Stunnel the right tool for this situation? I am using an Intel disk monitoring tool which has the ability to send out email alerts. In the Email Setup it asks for Host, From and To, there is not a username or pw. Could Stunnel be configured to add the username and pw and send the message to gmail's smtp?

Hi there I'm trying out the stunnel android binary from 4.50 on a rooted 2.3.6 Android, mapping localhost port 80 to a remote client-cert protected ActiveSync server. It crashes after a client makes a connection. Problems with Stunnel 4.5*

Hello Mike, many thanks for your work. However, I have problems with the current Stunnel versions. (I work with Windows 64bit.) Stunnel 4.47 works without problems. The Hobbit module to monitor imaps seems to try SSLv2 first, but also supports newer versions (SSLv3 and TLSv1). It looks like there is a known issue with FIPS running on Windows 7 from the mail archives. Is there something I could do to help get this fixed? I was planning on using stunnel to allow a FIPS compliant transmission of data over the wire. Key and Certificate file issue!

Hi, I am trying to establish a SSL connection with a remote server on a random port 10170. I have got a public key from the server side. And I have sent my public key to the server. And I am trying to use my certificate file and the public key of the server like this. cert = sunPrimary.pem key = sunStunnel.pem But the problem is both the public key from server and my own certificate file starts with "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----" by default. So now, if I don't change the "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----" header of the my certificate to "-----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY-----" I get errors and if I change it to private key and make the public key of the server as certificate then I still get errors. Hi, I'm running a pop3 server on a non-standard port and having stunnel listen on both 110 and 995 like so: [pop3_ssl] accept = 995 connect = ... [pop3_tls] accept = 110 connect = ... protocol = pop3 When connecting from an android device (2.3 on Nexus S at least), it confirms the server supports STLS using CAPA (and seemingly will not configure otherwise), so I modified protocol.c to announce support: < fdputline(c, c->local_wfd.fd, "+OK Stunnel capability list follows"); < fdputline(c, c->local_wfd.fd, "STLS"); < fdputline(c, c->local_wfd.fd, "."); --- > fdputline(c, c->local_wfd.fd, "-ERR Stunnel does not support capabilities"); It seems to me that there is no harm in this, because the RFC states that the client MUST recheck the servers capabilities with another CAPA command after starting TLS. Stunnel compilation issue on Mac OS X 10.5 powerpc

Hi, I've been trying to compile stunner (4.47) on a power pc Mac OS X Leopard (OS X 10.5) platform after a manual update to openssl v.1.0.0.e ggc is version 4.0.1. I run into an error according to which there would be undefined symbols in stunnel-ctx.o (see make output below). I can't figure out to which feature stunner-ctx.o is related, whether I need this feature and how to disable it in ./configure if I don't need it. Please note that I managed to install stunner 4.46 via fink on the same machine (such fink install of stunnel required installing a specific instance of openssl (v.1.0.0.0.e) within fink). Hi, I am trying to connect to a remote SSL enabled server via stunnel. I am using a single file for key and certificate "sunStunnel.pem", just like the default "stunnel.pem" and I am getting following errors. Please let me know, what they mean and what should be done to resolve these? Note: I was able to telnet the machine, so server seems to be working.
