Hi .. I have been having spotty access to my main ISP email account the last two days so I upgraded to latest sTunnel v 5.36. I use sTunnel to help get emails from my ISP, Comcast, to load into an older version of GoldMine CRM. sTunnel has worked like a charm since 09/2013. In restarting sTunnel I immediately got a 'server down' error, log included below. Ideas? Suggestions? Stunnel stops on Windows Server 2012

I've upgraded Stunnel from 5.35 to 5.36 on a server running windows server 2012. Since the upgrade it appears to stop running once i log out. I installed it as a service and set the service start to automatic. It has no problems running when someone is logged into the server. I'm not sure what i changed when i updated the version. Thanks

No cert?

Is there any way to configure a Stunnel server so that it doesn’t require a cert at all? I implement peer authentication using other means; I just want session encryption from Stunnel. Ideally, I’d like keys to be generated on-the-fly for each new connection. I don’t mind if this takes a few seconds… Thanks, Dave.

Hi Guys, To me this looks like a cipher issue. There are a few options that you can try to resolve this if it is. I would try adding the following lines into your STunnel Configuration file: delay = yes options = NO_SSLv2 options = NO_SSLv3 options = NO_TLSv1 options = CIPHER_SERVER_PREFERENCE options = DONT_INSERT_EMPTY_FRAGMENTS Delay will delay and DNS lookups that maybe actioned by the request (not normally needed but I always include if for sanity sake) The three 'options' sections turn off all the known problematic cipher lists if you need a key that is in one of these block feel free to remove that directive but I think a good start would be to leave the 'NO_SSLv3' option in place The 'CIPHER_SERVER_PREFERENCE' option will make set whether the client is allowed to renegotiat the ciphers that are to be used between the client and the server process. And finally 'DONT_INSERT_EMPTY_FRAGMENTS' will mitigate an issue in the CBC ciphers that was in the SSLv3 and TLS1.0 cipher lists again I only include it for sanity sake now but its better to have than to go without. -- With Kind Regards. I can send it if it’s useful but I’ve omitted it for now as it’s long. I’ve reproduced the same hang on Mac OS X 10.11 and 10.6. I’ve recompiled Stunnel in 10.11 and 10.9 environments but still get this same hang. Any advice appreciated.. — Dave.

Upgrade from 5.03 to 5.35

Hi, When I perform the upgrade the stunnel service won't start, it tries to load the pem files but it is failing. I noticed when I install stunnel on my test system, the conf file is different from the version 5.03. I use stunnel as a https proxy for my own http server (*). The server mode of stunnel 5.x does not work any more. It accepts the connection and then immediatelly closes it without sending back any data. stunnel 4.x is working fine (for many years!), with the same configuration. Issue with stunnel over squid

Hello, I have a windows machine running as a stunnel client that establishes a session but then, when launching an SSH session to my loopback crashes. Putty reports that the "Server unexpectedly closed the network connection." Dear all, I am currently trying to make stunnel work for an Android x86 architecture. The android binary found on the stunnel official website is not supported on x86 architecture, so I'd like to cross-compile it myself using the 'configure' options. I did not find much informations about this around the web, could you give me some advices or at least tell me if it is possible to make Stunnel work on an Android x86 device ? Stunnel exits with timeout

Summary of problem (configuration and log details below): I am attempting to configure Stunnel to run a pop3s service on our server so that users can retrieve email securely. Stunnel is started as a systemctl service. If I include both the following in the stunnel.conf: accept = mail.myserver.net:995 connect = localhost:110 then systemctl will exit immediately with: Service [pop3s]: Each service must define two endpoints stunnel.service: Control process exited, code=exited status=1 Failed to start SSL tunnel for network daemons. If I comment the connect to 110 then it will start and hang then eventually timeout: stunnel.service: Failed with result 'timeout'. Logging Issues Causing Crash?

Hello all, Has anyone experienced a full log file causing stunnel issues in the past? We tried upgrading from 4.56 to 5.17 and the upgrade seemed to go fine at first, but a day or so later we began to have some disconnects. Later we downgraded to 5.01 which worked OK at first, but then we ran into the same kinds of problems again after a few days. We eventually put the stunnel.log file on a separate filesystem, but I am curious, has anyone else experienced any issues like this? Thanks, Randy

Config was working. Now it isn't after reboot

I just reinstalled stunnel the latest version. When running I went through the creation of the pem file. I put in UK for the country code and the company name and put a . for everything else. It finished, I start the GUI and it works. I edited the config file to comment out the gmail IMAP section and reload it and it was fine. I rebooted, now it tells me tehre is an error in the config file. Why? I keep getting this problem. Rebooting seems to break the config somehow. Installation problem on Windows 2003

Hello stunnel-users: I'm trying to install stunnel 5.35 on a Windows 2003 box, 32-bit. The installer runs to completion, but we get an error from SimpleFC: SimpleFC::AddApplication failed to add stunnel What is causing this error to come up, and what do I have to do to fix it? Googling just showed that SimpleFC is a plugin to interact with the Windows Firewall. stunnel only sends some emails, not all, and only on second attempt

Hi I'm using the latest Stunnel (5.35), running under Windows Server 2000, to download emails from Outlook(Office365)/Outlook 2016 to another email client called OfficeTalk which only supports unencrypted POP3, so it can't access Outlook directly. First problem is that although most emails are downloaded without problem, some stubbornly and consistently refuse to be downloaded. This omission doesn't seem related to attachments, encoding, size, date, or anything else that I can see. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea why it might be happening?? Second problem is that the first download doesn't produce anything, but if I run the request again, it works - the only difference in the log files is the IP addresses I'd greatly appreciate any advice on this - I've checked the threads but can't find anything similar. Hello Everyone, I am running Stunnel-5.29 in AiX 7.1 TL3 SP6. I have added the DH param to the bottom of my CERT file. After approximately 24 hours or so the Stunnel CPU usage jumps to about 50% and after a few days to about 90%. Is there a configuration setting I've missed or compile option I need to consider? Man in the middle attack possibility

Hi, I'm trying to use stunnel to provide encryption for my application to server communication. Server is already ssl aware. I configured my app to talk to localhost:xyz, and configured stunnel in client mode to relay traffic from localhost:<xyz> to actual service. The stunnel to service ssl protocol would use the server certificate, as server is already ssl aware. For any reason if stunnel is not running it would become possible for a non-elevated attacker/malware to spin up a tcp server listening to xyz, essentially taking advantage of my re-configuration of app to talk to localhost:xyz, and spoof the actual server. Even if my app to server protocol had some anti-spoofing mechanism say e.g., reverse CHAP, the malware can easily relay the challenge and response by using the actual service. In my case the actual app is iscsi initiator software that is not in my control and cant be modified, while the server is an iscsi tcp server which I am free to modify. Are there any guidance/best practices around preventing this attack with stunnel? Thanks Abhinav

stunnel and hosts.allow

Hi, This may be a little bit off-topic, but does anyone here use stunnel with pan? My connections to stunnel (in pan) are always refused by libwrap. I was looking for the right rule to add to /etc/hosts.allow but nothing seems to work aside from "ALL : ALL" (which is obviously not good) and "nntps: KNOWN". Is the latter reasonable? The hosts_access(5) manpage is confusing to say the least. It mentions that daemon (the first token on any line) is the name of the daemon running the process, which would be "stunnel" in my case, but using "stunnel : LOCAL" or even "stunnel : ALL" doesn't work. The rule that seems to work, as mentioned, is "nntps : KNOWN" ("nntps" being the group name in stunnel.conf). What's even more confusing to me is that "nntps : LOCAL" does not work either. Nor does "nntps : localhost 127.0.0.1", "nntps : localhost", "nntps : 127.0.0.1", or "nntps : 192.168.1.". Pan is running on the same machine as stunnel so all connections must be coming from localhost. Why do these rules not trigger? Either way, I'd like to know the "least permissive" hosts.allow rule that would allow me to connect to my news provider from pan, and/or whether "nntps : KNOWN" is a safe option. Thanks, Yousef

Jose, I have discovered what I did wrong. I did the original stunnel installs from the command line and then installed the stunnel service from the command line as well. When I installed the stunnel service it would break the website. So I removed the service (I thought) then I copied a shortcut to stunnel.exe to the Win start up> program folder. Both sites started working on the servers as long as I was logged in through an RDP session. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled. Stunnel 5.32 installs a Windows GUI on Server 2012 as well so I went back and used the Windows server 2012 desktop applications to install the windows service and to stop the GUI application. Everything is now working as expected. It appears that I was running two instances of stunnel at the same time and I didn’t completely remove the original stunnel service. I am using stunnel to enable SoapUI Mock Servers to support SSL connections. Compiling for Windows CE

Hello, Are there more up to date instructions for compiling on Windows CE? I found the version here that works but is old and missing one of the features I need to connect to the server: http://www.usenix.org.uk/mirrors/stunnel/wce/ The instructions for building say you need evt2002web_min.exe, which as far as I can tell is no longer available. I can't get the newer version (evc4.exe) to work on a modern windows system (or under linux using wine) either. I think the CE version is still being used, as I saw references to it in the latest changelog. If someone has a more modern guide to building it I would appreciate it. Thanks, Bart de Waal

Broadband and stunnel weird behavior

Hi, I was in doubt if post this or not because I couldn't replicate with enough similarities. But as it may be worth, if it is an actual bug, or help others... why not? Here I have to say that it is more noticeable under Windows 2000. That doesn’t mean doesn’t happen on higher OSs, but, from XP, it isn’t as noticeable. So, please, don’t stop reading here. But, hey, I know it is obsolete, and I know this is long and I’ll understand if you don’t want to read this. I tend to make a lot of “speed tests” because ISPs in my country… well, if you have luck, great, if not, brace yourself with the fights. Maybe as other countries :/ About February my download broadband was enhanced from 30Mb to 50Mb. This is important because is when it started all. With only 30Mb I didn’t notice any problem. “Speed tests“ were fine with “only” 30Mb and all matched the contracted speed and even a bit more. But when I had 50Mb I started to see some annoyances that sometimes was over 50Mb and others... if I had the luck to have 30Mb, it was a miracle. It wasn’t the test used. It was any test, with any technology (flash, html5, java, etc). The difference was just a couple of Mb. But all reflected the problems. They were so random, but something in common is that the tests didn’t show the correct speed at the end of my PC usage day. So I thought, something in memory, maybe, was causing it. But, also, it didn’t happen all days. At the end of the day, sometimes, I topped the 50Mb. And here starts the discarding process. I have a humble Pentium 4 and, even it is not powerful, one of the things I do (that I won’t explain why) is to throttle it (decrease speed). It is one of the first things I discarded, because as higher the broadband, the CPU load at full speed is higher as well. I only noticed a little improvement. This wasn’t the problem. Even I uninstalled the filter driver. So, if the CPU wasn’t the problem, programs should be. And I started with everything. And I left Stunnel as one of the latest. And there was the problem. When Stunnel is open, the speed cuts at about 30Mb. Yeah, I couldn’t believe myself either. After several tests, I discovered that Stunnel isn’t either the problem itself. The problem comes from the amount of services in .conf file. The more you have, the more speed problems you’ll have. I discovered this with the second instance of Stunnel I use for servers, which only has 7 services (3 SNI). I mainly use Stunnel as client for non-SSL aware programs and I have set 16 services. The options of .conf file, or services options, seems to don’t have much effect on speed tests. At the end, one way or another, the result is that if I open Stunnel, I can’t top full speed. I close it and voilà!, even during the same speed test. What is causing it? Probably just Windows 2000, or maybe not. Windows 2000 doesn’t have a connection limit as XP, one of the things I thought about. Anyway, I just wanted to shared this with you, just in case helps or anything. Regards. Indeed, both some-server and some-other-address have both A and AAAA records, corresponding addresses are configured and functional. OS is FreeBSD, I was ensured that this combination (INET6 socket and INET bind) is not correct. It probably works sometime when first resolved addresses for names happen to come from the same address family, but when resolvers return different order, the situation above occurs. Disabling ipv6 support makes the connection work reliably, which confirms my observations. I am using stunnel 5.31. Would be nice to have this fixed. Thanks.

Potential performance degradation moving from Stunnel 5.06 to 5.32

There might be a throughput degradation in the more recent versions of stunnel. I have recently been testing the 5.32 version of stunnel and have noticed that the tps drop quite significantly when moving from 5.06 to 5.32. Im willing to admit it could be something to do with my config or testing. But if anyone could offer some suggestions it would be much appreciated. The config is setup as follows - Stunnel VIP -> Haproxy. (I have configured haproxy to return a simple page). To reiterate the only thing I am changing in my configuration is the stunnel binary. Everything else is remaining the same. Does anyone have any ideas what could be happening? Thankyou Mark

stunnel on AIX 7

Does anyone here have any experience in installing and/or running stunnel on AIX? I have version 4.56 installed on my AIX v.7 box, but I checked when this was released and it was over three years ago. I found a version 5.17-2 binary available on Perzl.org but nothing more recent (this version is slightly over a year old). I did try a compile of the newest version but got some errors when I tried to run make (1254-004 error on collect2). Does anyone have any ideas on what would be the best way to proceed here?
