If you use automake you could add the following code to
tools/Makefile.am:

install-data-local:
     mkdir -p $(localstatedir)/stunnel
     -chmod a=rwx,+t $(localstatedir)/stunnel
     mkdir -p $(localstatedir)/stunnel/dev
     -chmod u=rwx,go=rx $(localstatedir)/stunnel/dev
     -uname | grep SunOS && mknod $(localstatedir)/stunnel/dev/zero c 13
12
     -chmod a=rw $(localstatedir)/stunnel/dev/zero

Update your Makefile with automake and ./configure.

chroot directory should be set to /usr/local/var/stunnel instead of
/usr/local/var/run/stunnel.

Best regards,
     Mike
